Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a typical eye exam appointment take?

Most eye exams take between 15 to 45 minutes based on overall health, vision concerns and determination of your prescriptions.

Is it necessary to dilate my eyes during an eye exam?

We would prefer you do an additional test called the OCT. It is like getting an MRI of the back of the eye and it is vital in determination of the health of the eye. Unfortunately insurance does not cover the OCT test unless , so it is an elective procedure.

What happens during a comprehensive eye exam?

For a comprehensive exam we will check your vision with and without correction, determine your color vision and stereo vision, check your current glasses or contact lens prescription, check the pressure in your eye, determine your glasses and contact lens prescription with your help and then decide whether we need a prescription to increase your vision and if need to add any treatments for eye health such as dry eye remedies or drops for glaucoma etc. If needed we will dilate the eyes or perform an OCT to determine health of the eyes and ocular system. At the end of the exam reports can be sent to your primary care doctor or referrals can be made for eye treatments outside our scope.

How often should I have an eye exam?

General Eye Exams are best performed yearly.  If you have diabetes your primary care doctor may want you to visit twice a year.  For eye concerns such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, injuries and use of some medications more visits may be necessary to maintain optimum vision and health.

What is an optometrist, and what services do they provide?

An optometrist is a primary care doctor that has completed undergraduate school and a four-year doctorate that specializes in the eye, both for health and vision.
