See Clearly & Stay on Top of Your Eye Health
Our eye exams are about more than updating your prescription or tackling new symptoms. We’re here to focus on your unique vision needs, protect your eye health in the future, and uncover potential issues before they affect your life.
Your eye exam with our optometrist typically takes 15–45 minutes, depending on your needs. During this time, we get to know you, review your visual and overall health, and answer every one of your questions with clear information that makes sense. Because when it comes to your eyes, we’re here to care for them as much as you do. We have fun and engaging kids’ eye exams for your child or teen.

Why Regular Eye Exams Are Essential
How often should you have an eye exam? For most adults, we recommend a comprehensive exam every year. For seniors, contact lens wearers, or people with diabetes or eye disease, we typically recommend more frequent exams.
Why? Life moves fast, and so do changes in your eyes. Regular eye exams allow us to monitor shifts in your vision and detect conditions like glaucoma, AMD, or diabetic eye disease early. Many common eye diseases start with no symptoms but can lead to irreversible vision loss if untreated. Catching these issues early can protect your vision and your quality of life.
Seeing More with OCT Scans
For many of our patients, we recommend a key additional test: optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fundus photography. This quick, noninvasive scan gives us a detailed look at the structures inside your eye and a wonderful level of detailed information about your eyes.
It’s a valuable and repeatable test that provides us with a baseline of your eye health. We can compare images over time and track any changes more easily. It’s objective and clear, and we take the time to show you striking imagery of the inside of your eyes so you can see what we see!
We typically recommend an OCT scan for patients with an active eye disease, a family history of certain eye disease or other conditions, or anyone who is as fascinated by their eyes as we are.
How OCT Works
OCT is like an ultrasound for your eye, but instead of sound waves, it uses light waves to create detailed cross-sectional images of the retina.
While we can spot major changes to your retina through other means, OCT allows us to detect even minor changes that might otherwise go unnoticed. It’s one of the best tools we have to show you how your vision may change over time and detect the earliest signs of eye disease.
Your eyes are your window to the world. Stay on top of their health with regular check-ins with your Bethany Eye Care optometrist.
What We’re Checking in Your Eye Exam at Bethany Eye Care
During your eye exam, we want to hear if you’ve noticed any changes in your vision lately. Those changes could include blurred vision, light sensitivity, discomfort at the end of the workday, dry eyes, or other issues. We can use that as a jumping-off point to determine the cause and recommend a course of action.
Typically, we’ll test your visual acuity and how well your eyes work together and check your current glasses or contact lens prescription.
Importantly, we’ll check for any signs of common eye diseases or conditions that can develop without obvious symptoms. These include:
- Diabetic eye disease: Diabetes can affect blood vessels in the eye, potentially causing vision impairment.
- Age-related macular degeneration (AMD): AMD affects central vision and is a leading cause of vision loss in older adults.
- Glaucoma: This silently progressing disease damages the optic nerve and can lead to vision loss if left untreated.
- Cataracts: A normal part of aging, cataracts are a clouding of the natural lens of the eye, which can cause blurry vision and other vision loss.
- Dry eye: If your eyes frequently feel gritty or tired, or they’re red, watery, or sensitive to light, it could be caused by dry eyes.
- Presbyopia: Another common and normal age-related condition that makes it difficult to focus on nearby objects like a book or your phone.
Your eye exam can actually reveal more than just vision problems. Your eyes can give us important information about overall health conditions, including high blood pressure, diabetes, and autoimmune diseases.
Seeing your optometrist is one of the best ways to stay on top of your health, inside and out.
Can’t Read Your Phone as Easily Lately? It Might Be Presbyopia
Noticed it’s harder to read a menu or your phone without moving your arm away? You might just be experiencing presbyopia.
This completely normal (though annoying) condition, typically starting in your early to mid-40s, happens when the lens inside your eye loses its ability to focus on nearby objects. Along with blurry vision at reading distance, you might also notice your eyes feel tired or you get headaches while doing close work, including using a computer.
The good news? The right glasses or contact lens prescription can make your vision clearer and more comfortable. During your eye exam, we’ll discuss your options and help you find the right solution so you can stay focused without missing a beat.

What Our Patients Are Saying
“A Wealth of Knowledge”
I came here for the first time and had a great experience! Dr. Boaldin was wonderful not only as a doctor but also as someone who has the best bedside manner. Most doctors are in and out, but he took the time to talk to me and have a conversation. He also has a wealth of knowledge and will explain everything he’s doing and why. And he corrected my prescription, which had been wrong for the past 8 years! They have a huge selection of glasses to choose from and lots of variety for any budget. I definitely will be recommending him to friends and family!
Annie Berg
